Swanson Honored by Society for Range Management with Sustained Lifetime Achievement Award
MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA – Dr. Sherman Swanson received the
Sustained Lifetime Achievement Award at the Society for Range Management’s 79th Annual Meeting in Monterey, California last month. The Sustained Lifetime Achievement Award is presented by the Society for Range Management to members for long-term contributions to the art and science of range management and to the Society for Range Management (SRM).
Dr. Swanson’s career as a dedicated and tireless educator as well as a passionate advocate for Nevada’s rangelands began with his appointment to the University of Nevada in 1983. Over the next 36 years, Dr. Swanson served as an extension specialist, instructor, researcher, mentor, widely published author and graduate school director.
He served as the coordinator for the Nevada Creeks and Communities program since 2004 and to date, it has offered nearly 100 classes serving an estimated 1,000 students from all walks of life. He also led in the development and publication of both the 2006 and 2018 versions of the Nevada Range and Monitoring Handbook.
Dr. Swanson has fostered collaboration and consensus across many diverse groups of stakeholders – taking a leadership role in addressing the highly controversial and politically charged issue of overgrazing by free-roaming horses on public lands. He has been involved with SRM for more than 40 years where he has made extensive contributions to the Society as well.
There is a saying that ‘people won’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.’ Anyone who has met and worked with Dr. Swanson is left with little doubt about the depth of his caring. Although he “retired” in 2019, he continues his work with the University of Nevada as a Professor Emeritus in Rangeland and Riparian Ecology and Management.
For the tremendous contributions to the science and management of rangeland ecosystems he has made, it is with great honor the Society of Range Management recognized Dr. Sherman Swanson with the Sustained Lifetime Achievement Award.
