About The Position
South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension is seeking a Precision Livestock Extension Field Specialist I to provide statewide leadership in delivering research-based education, resources, and programming focused on precision livestock systems. Based in Rapid City, this is a 12-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position.
SDSU is South Dakota's largest university, serving approximately 12,000 students with more than 200 academic programs and $94 million in annual research expenditures. SDSU Extension delivers research-based education across Agriculture and Natural Resources, Food & Families, Community Vitality, and 4-H Youth Development. This position is part of the Agriculture and Natural Resources program and collaborates closely with the Department of Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science to advance Extension programming, applied research, and statewide impact.

Key Responsibilities
Provide statewide leadership in precision livestock Extension programming.
Develop and deliver research-based educational programs using innovative technologies.
Identify emerging issues affecting livestock producers and support learning communities.
Collaborate on externally funded research and Extension projects across disciplines.
Build relationships with producers, industry partners, and stakeholders to strengthen educational outreach.
Provide technical expertise and support informed decision-making on statewide issues.
Recruit and engage volunteers and industry leaders to expand Extension efforts.
Adapt and utilize technology to enhance program delivery.
Minimum Qualifications
M.S. in Animal Science or a closely related field by the start date.
Experience working with precision livestock technologies.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and time management abilities.
Proficiency with computer and information technologies.
Valid driver's license (or ability to obtain one within 30 days) and willingness to travel statewide.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with ruminant livestock systems.
Knowledge of data security and management.
Experience securing grants or external funding.
Ability to translate precision livestock technologies and data into practical recommendations for producers.
