M.S. Graduate Research Assistantship – Rangeland Ecology
(The Role of Forbs in Rangelands & Beef Cattle Diets in the Northern Great Plains)
A funded M.S. student position is available in Dr. Krista Ehlert’s lab in the Natural Resource Management Department at South Dakota State University (SDSU): https://www.sdstate.edu/natural-resource-management. The desired start date is August 2026.
The Ehlert Lab is focused on developing high-quality, well-rounded leaders in rangeland ecology who produce strong research and possess the highly sought-after skill of effectively communicating science to land managers and stakeholders. We value rigorous field-based science, stakeholder-driven questions, and clear, applied outcomes.
Project overview:
This M.S. project will examine the role of forbs (flowering plants) in rangelands and beef cattle diets, with the goal of improving our understanding of how forb communities influence grazing outcomes and rangeland management decisions. The student will contribute to study design, data collection and analysis, and outreach products that translate findings into management-relevant insights.
Responsibilities include:
• Data collection on vegetation and cattle diet selection
• Data management and analysis using R statistical software
• Scientific writing, including a thesis and peer-reviewed manuscripts
• Stakeholder engagement and communication through workshops and Extension articles, etc.
• Professional development through conference presentations and networking
• Adherence to SDSU research compliance requirements (IACUC)
Required qualifications:
• B.S. in rangeland ecology, natural resources, animal science, ecology, or a related field
• Interest in rangeland plants, grazing management, and applied research
• Strong work ethic, curiosity, and comfort working independently in rural field settings
• Effective communication
• Strong time-management and ability to meet deadlines
• Willingness to engage in stakeholder-driven research and applied outreach
Preferred qualifications:
• Previous experience working around/with beef cattle
• Ability to lead and mentor undergraduate research technicians
• Comfort troubleshooting challenges without constant direction

• Field work will be conducted at the SDSU Cottonwood Field Station near Wall, SD (approximately 1 hour east of Rapid City, SD)
