About The Position
The Soil Health Institute (SHI), a non-profit organization created to safeguard and enhance the vitality
and productivity of soil, seeks to hire a full-time Research Scientist to lead soil health assessments in
rangeland grazing systems of the western USA and Canada.
This scientist will develop and implement innovative approaches for soil health benchmarking and
monitoring in rangeland grazing systems, conduct data analysis, and communicate results through
publications, training, and outreach. The successful candidate will work closely with the SHI team and
partners to deliver science-based tools and knowledge that empower ranchers, advisors, and
organizations to strengthen soil and ecosystem resilience.
This position will report to Dr. Mara Cloutier, Program Director and Research Soil Scientist, and support
an Advancing Markets for Producers grant. We seek a self-motivated researcher who is passionate
about improving soil health and rangeland management and who thrives in a collaborative, applied
research environment. Remote work is expected, with periodic travel. The preferred start date is March
2, 2026.
Key Responsibilities
• Collaborate with SHI scientists to develop and validate soil health benchmarking and monitoring
approach for western grazing systems
• Analyze, synthesize, and report soil health data collected from rangeland systems
• Review and synthesize Western grazing studies related to soil health to author a peer-review
publication
• Provide technical guidance to ranchers and land mangers on grazing practices that can enhance
soil health and rangeland health in the Pacific Northwest
• Convene a workshop exploring the nexus between rangeland health and soil health
• Develop and deliver educational programs, both virtually and in-person, including field days, soil
health/rangeland health events, and listening sessions tailored for diverse ranching and grazing
communities
• Contribute expertise to advance SHI project deliverables and broader institutional initiatives
Qualifications

Education: Ph.D. in soil science, rangeland science or related field
Experience: soil or rangeland health assessment.
Demonstrated experience conducting research in grazing systems, particularly in

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Strong data analysis skills, including proficiency in R and GIS
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to translate complex
scientific concepts for diverse audiences – ranchers, conservation professionals,
corporate partners, and policymakers
• Experience working collaboratively with ranchers, land managers, or producer
networks
• Record of advancing science through peer-reviewed publications
• Effective interpersonal communication and team facilitation skills
• Ability to take initiative, manage multiple priorities, and thrive in a primarily remote
environment
• Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States and
possess a valid United States driver’s license
Work Environment
This position is primarily remote, with preference for candidates living in or near the rangeland regions
of the western United States. Travel is expected approximately 5 to 15% of the time.
Compensation
Expected annual salary is $90,000 - $100,000, depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full-
time staff position with competitive paid leave, life, health and dental insurance, 401K, and other
benefits.
