MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA — Dr. Kirk Davies received the W.R. Chapline Research Award at the Society for Range Management’s 79th Annual Meeting in Monterey, California earlier this year. The Chapline Research Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Society for Range Management to a research scientist, recognizing outstanding contributions to rangeland science and the advancement of knowledge supporting effective rangeland management.
Dr. Davies is a research scientist with the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Burns, Oregon, where he has built a recognized research program focused on rangeland ecology, plant invasions, restoration, and disturbance dynamics. His work applies advanced research approaches to better understand how rangeland systems function and how they can be managed to sustain both productivity and ecological integrity.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Davies has published more than 270 scientific works, including over 190 peer-reviewed journal articles, providing a strong scientific foundation for the management and restoration of rangeland ecosystems. His research identifies practical management strategies that support both agricultural production and the conservation of diverse rangeland landscapes.
Dr. Davies’ work is widely used by federal agencies, conservation organizations, and private land managers, bridging the gap between research and on-the-ground management decisions. In addition to his extensive research contributions, he has served as a peer reviewer for more than 50 scientific journals.
Beyond his research achievements, Dr. Davies has demonstrated a strong commitment to mentoring the next generation of rangeland scientists and land managers. He has mentored numerous graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, and his research is widely incorporated into rangeland science and management courses at universities throughout the western United States.
For his tremendous contributions to advancing the science and management of rangeland ecosystems, the Society for Range Management is proud to recognize Dr. Kirk Davies with the W.R. Chapline Research Award.
