Lost Resource: Remembering Lia Biondo

The Society for Range Management mourns the loss of our former colleague and friend, Lia Biondo, who passed away on July 24, 2025, in Montana, doing what she loved most—riding horses with friends.

Lia previously served SRM as Director of Federal Policy and was truly instrumental in advancing the rangeland profession on a national level. Her leadership, deep understanding of policy, and fierce commitment to rangelands and our natural resources helped shape SRM’s presence in Washington, D.C. and beyond.

Lia’s impact reached far beyond her official role as she was a friend and mentor to many, known for her infectious love of life, sharp wit, and unwavering courage in the face of any challenge. Whether advocating for rangelands on Capitol Hill, collaborating with colleagues, or riding in wide-open spaces, Lia had a unique way of bringing people together and lifting their spirits.

As we remember her incredible contributions, we recognize that Lia will always be a part of the SRM family. Her legacy and example will continue to inspire our work and our community for years to come.

To honor Lia’s memory and her steadfast belief in supporting women in agriculture, Western Skies Strategies, where Lia worked for almost a decade, will be establishing a scholarship in her name. The scholarship will support women pursuing education and opportunies in agriculture and natural resources, a nod to Lia’s own bold journey. In lieu of flowers and as a remembrance to Lia, donations to this scholarship may be mailed to WSS at 100 North 27th St., Suite 600 D, Billings, MT 59101; checks may be payable to Western Skies Strategies, please ensure that the note field states, “In memory of Lia”. More details on the scholarship will be shared as they are finalized.

A memorial service celebrating Lia’s life will be held on July 29th at 6:00pm, at the home of Jess Peterson, 4030 Thunder Ridge Road, Billings, Montana. All are welcome.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Lia’s family, friends, and all who had the good fortune to know her. From all of us at Society for Range Management, thank you for joining us in honoring the legacy of a woman who truly made a difference.
