Seasonal Soil Technician Job Posting

Are you looking to earn a little money and gain work experience this summer while enjoying time outdoors? Grouse Mountain is looking for you! We are seeking Seasonal Soil Technicians to join our teams in completing rangeland assessments across Wyoming. Applicants should have experience digging soil pits, identifying soil horizons, and field texturing. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in soil identification and the ability to identify the correct Ecological Site Description (ESD) for the rangeland site. The paid position will start in May and continue into early September (dates flexible). We are also able to work with you and your professors so that you can earn course credits for this internship. Hired interns will be provided with free housing.

Overview of Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Travel and sample rangeland sites throughout the state of Wyoming
  • Navigate to rangeland sites using a GPS and a 4-wheel vehicle to collect accurate field data using a Microsoft tablet
  • Read maps and use Trimble GPS to find remote locations
  • Dig soil pits and identify soil horizons
  • Classify texture and color soils
  • Identify Ecological Site Description (ESD) based on collected vegetation and soil data

    Qualifications

  • 15 semester hours of education from an accredited university in subjects such as soil genesis, pedology, soil chemistry, soil physics, and soil fertility or

    any of the 4 certifications from the Soil Science Society of America

  • Experience classifying soil composition and texture
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds on a regular basis
  • Ability to hike difficult terrain in variable weather conditions
  • Skilled in operating UTVs
  • Willingness to travel and camp overnight across Wyoming
  • Previous AIM training a plus, but not required

 

Seasonal Rangeland Technician Crew Lead Job Posting

Are you looking for an opportunity to increase your plant identification skills, earn some money, get college credit, and spend time outdoors this summer? Our company, Grouse Mountain Environmental Consultants, is seeking a Seasonal Rangeland Technician Crew Lead with experience in plant identification and rangeland sampling methodologies based out of our Buffalo, WY, office. The Crew Lead will be managing a crew while completing rangeland assessments in accordance with the BLM’s Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) protocol, and other vegetation measurement processes. The position will start in May and continue into early September (dates flexible). We are also able to work with you and your professors so that you can earn course credits for this internship. Hired interns will be provided with free housing.

  • Read and record line point intercept transects
  • Collect vegetative forage production data by clipping

  • Skilled in operating UTVs
  • Willingness to travel and camp overnight across Wyoming
  • Ability to lift over 30lbs
  • Ability to hike difficult terrain in variable weather conditions
  • Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) training a plus, but not required
  • Interpreting Indicators of Rangeland Health training a plus, but not required
