Introduction

The purpose of the Rangeland Invasive Species Committee is to serve the Society for Range Management (SRM) by focusing attention, sharing knowledge, and communicating concerns about rangeland invasive species.

What is an Invasive Species? As defined by the National Invasive Species Information Center (NISIC):

An ‘invasive species’ is defined as a species that is 1) non-native (or alien) to the ecosystem under consideration and 2) whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health (Executive Order 13112). Invasive species can be plants, animals, and other organisms (e.g., microbes). Human actions are the primary means of invasive species introductions.

Invasive rangeland weeds have rapidly moved to the forefront as a concern in management of rangelands. Invasive plant invasions are changing landscapes at a rapid pace, threatening native plant and animal species, and often impact human well-being. They are capable of reducing biodiversity, habitat for wildlife and native plants, and altering ecosystem function across broad scales. Exact economic impacts of rangeland invasive plants are difficult to quantify, but include reductions in land value of infested areas, loss of production and income, costs of controlling invasive plants and job losses.

Handbook

Introduction
The Rangeland Invasive Species Committee (RISC) was authorized at the 1999 Society for Range Management (SRM) meeting in Omaha, NE. Prior to that time the committee had functioned as a task force.
Purpose

The purpose of the RISC is to serve SRM by focusing attention, sharing knowledge, and communicating concerns about rangeland invasive species. The committee will meet once a year at the annual SRM meeting to:

  • Share ideas, information, and knowledge
  • Review and provide comments on resolutions
  • Serve as a forum to discuss current issues
  • Provide recommendations to the Board of Directors concerning SRM policy and position statements
  • Plan and develop Invasive Species Symposia for annual SRM meetings

As part of the SRM strategic plan to enhance external communication and influence public policy RISC members are encouraged to participate with congressional briefings and other activities in Washington, D.C. during the National Invasive Weed Awareness Week (NIWAW).

Membership
Membership in the RISC is open to any member of SRM with an interest in invasive species. All SRM members with voting privileges can vote on any issues brought forth during the annual committee meeting.
Committee Structure and Function
A chair is elected by the committee for a 2-year term. The chair is responsible for conducting the annual meeting, providing the SRM Board of Directors with a written report, communicating with committee members, appointing members to appropriate sub-committees, and scheduling future meetings with the SRM Annual Meeting Planning Committee. A chair-elect is selected 1 year prior to that individual becoming chair.
