Mojave Desert/Vegetation Tour

Pre-Convention Technical Tour

January 29, 7:30am - 5:00pm



Covers a broad range of environments from hot desert to mountain meadows, we will look at historic descriptions of the vegetation from pioneer accounts.

7:30      Depart Dixie Center, Virgin River Gorge Highway, Livestock history, Wild sheep

8:10      Beaver Dam:  Creosote Brush – White Bursage Desert Tortoise habitat.

9:15      Gunlock Dam:    Fires, Cheatgrass

10:00    Blackbush Ecology

10:40    Mtn  Meadows History, Vegetation change, Repeat Photos, soil changes

12:20    Bench Road: Escalante Valley History.

1:10      8 mile P-J Management Bull hog vs chaining, Fire History, Cedar Valley

1:45      Cedar City, Sizzler, Lunch

3:15      Browse True Chaparral type, Giant Sequoia

4:00      Return to Dixie Center

Take a lok at Zion National Park and Pipe Springs National Monument.

8:30       Arrive at Zion National Park Visitor Center

8:35       Talk about Zion Canyon (Park Ranger)

9:10       Walk around Visitor Center

9:40       Head up canyon to Zion Lodge

9:50       Talk on restoration work in Park (Bio Tech, NPS)

10:20     Talk on river channelization (Dave Sharrow, NPS)

11:00     Travel to Big Bend

11:30     Talk and Look at river/cottonwood (Dave Sharrow, NPS)

12:00     Head back to Grotto for lunch

12:10     Lunch

1:10       Drive through tunnel to Pipe Springs National Monument

2:50       Arrive at Pipe Springs talks (Park Rangers and Dave Sharrow, NPS) and tour monument

3:45       Leave Pipe Springs for Dixie Center

5:00       Arrive at Dixie Center

Highlights typical vegetation treatments done in Utah in sagebrush and juniper mule deer ecology.

               Paunsagunt Mule Deer Hunting

9:30       1.5 million dollar Deer Fence/deer migration: Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR)

10:45     Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument (GSENM) Vegetation Management, Water

               Developments, New Catchment Covers, Wildlife Studies by Raymond Brinkerhoff, Cameron

               McQuivy (BLM)

12:30     Lunch at the Kanab City Park

2:00       Kanab BLM Field office Vegetation Management Yellow Jacket Project, John Reese, Carson

               Gubler, Lisa Church (BLM).

3:00       Coral pink sand dunes/Tiger Beetle

4:00       Depart for Dixie Center

6:00       Arrive at Dixie Center
